CPR Training FAQ

CPR Training FAQ

The difference between CPR and BLS Training lies in their specific focuses and target audience. BLS, which stands for Basic Life Support and is another term for CPR, provides a more comprehensive understanding of life-saving skills. It is designed specifically for medical professionals and first responders, ensuring they possess the necessary knowledge and abilities to handle emergency situations. BLS training includes CPR training and expands further to incorporate additional training on the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

On the other hand, CPR training aims to equip a broader audience with essential CPR skills to perform life-saving techniques as a single rescuer on family members or coworkers. While accessible to anyone, CPR training is less extensive than BLS training. It focuses primarily on providing instruction for performing CPR and may not cover advanced topics or team-based approaches used by medical professionals.

As American Heart Association instructors, our classes offer comprehensive training in CPR and BLS techniques. Here are some of the skills and techniques you will learn:

  • ๐Ÿ”„ Chest compressions: This technique involves applying rhythmic pressure on the chest to help circulate blood and restore cardiac function.
  • ๐Ÿ’จ Combination of chest compressions and artificial ventilation: This approach combines chest compressions with rescue breaths to maintain oxygen supply and circulation.
  • ๐Ÿ’ช Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR: IAC-CPR is a three-rescuer technique that includes chest compressions and alternating abdominal compressions, providing effective support during resuscitation efforts.
  • ๐Ÿ” Advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS): ACLS training goes beyond basic CPR skills and encompasses advanced life support techniques. It covers CPR, AED use, and management of respiratory arrest, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes, and stroke.
  • ๐Ÿ‘ Hands-only CPR: This method emphasizes immediate chest compressions without rescue breaths. It involves calling for help and rapidly pushing on the chest to maintain blood flow.
  • ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ”„ Traditional CPR with breaths: This approach includes a combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths, providing both circulation and oxygenation during resuscitation.

By offering these diverse CPR techniques, our classes equip individuals with the necessary skills to respond confidently and effectively in emergency situations. Our goal is to empower residents of Collin County with life-saving knowledge and the ability to perform CPR and BLS techniques accurately.

Basic life support (BLS) is a critical level of medical care used to assist patients with life-threatening illnesses or injuries until advanced life support providers can administer full medical care. BLS encompasses various essential components, including:

  • Recognition of signs of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), heart attack, stroke, and foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO)
  • ๐Ÿ’“ Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • ๐Ÿซ Checking the patient's airway, breathing, and circulation
  • ๐Ÿ“ž Calling for professional help (EMS)
  • ๐Ÿ’ช Performing high-quality chest compressions
  • ๐Ÿ’จ Delivering appropriate ventilations

BLS offers a more comprehensive approach than just CPR and AED use, making it specifically designed for medical professionals and first responders. Nevertheless, individuals from various backgrounds can attend BLS training and obtain certification to enhance their life-saving skills.

Basic Life Support (BLS) is designed for healthcare professionals who need the following important skills:

  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Use an AED, automated external defibrillators: Learn how to effectively operate an AED, a crucial device used to deliver a shock to restore a normal heart rhythm in cases of sudden cardiac arrest.
  • ๐Ÿ’“ CPR for adults, children, and infants: Gain proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques for individuals of different age groups, including adults, children, and infants.
  • โš ๏ธ Recognize several life-threatening emergencies: Develop the ability to identify and assess various life-threatening situations, enabling you to initiate appropriate and timely interventions.
  • ๐Ÿซ Adequate usage of bag-mask for ventilation: Understand the correct usage of a bag-mask device to provide ventilation support when a patient's breathing is compromised.
  • ๐Ÿ’จ Relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner: Acquire the necessary skills to promptly and safely address choking incidents, ensuring the obstruction is cleared and the patient can breathe normally again.

The BLS class is specifically tailored to meet the needs of healthcare professionals, equipping them with these vital skills to provide immediate and effective care in critical situations. ๐Ÿฉบ๐Ÿ’ช

Yes, even though we wish your CPR/AED certification could last forever, it does have an expiration date. Just like that leftover pizza in the fridge, certifications need to be periodically checked to ensure they're still fresh and effective. After all, CPR techniques evolve, and we want you to be up-to-date with the latest life-saving moves.

Remember, expired certifications won't impress your friends at parties, and they definitely won't impress potential employers. So, let us help you stay on top of your game, because saving lives is cool, and staying certified is even cooler.

Disclaimer: While we wish we could offer you an eternity of certification, unfortunately, even our certification has a shelf life. But hey, two years is still pretty good, right?
