Judy Roper has operated Motueka Sunday Market since it began in 1986.
How it all began
Judy Roper is a woman who knows how to get things done. In 1986, she took it upon herself to create a market in Motueka, which had previously lacked one. Judy was successful in organising a market day at site of the Unilever Processing Plant on the Sunday closest to Waitangi Day. Though the first market was small, with only a handful of stalls, it demonstrated the potential for growth. The market soon outgrew the original site and moved to its current location. The market has grown year on year since Judy founded it. Judy Roper is a true trailblazer, and thanks to her efforts, Motueka now has a thriving market scene.

For over three decades, the Motueka Sunday Market has been running as a focal point for the local community. Operating every Sunday from 8am-1pm, this event features over 60 stalls of fresh produce and craft items to browse or buy. You can find something for everyone with food stalls, clothing stalls and children’s activities, all within proximity. With live music playing throughout the day, you can enjoy this market as a family outing or out with friends.
